‘Still in love’: Why these residents still swoon on Valentine’s Day

Story by Rhylea Thompson

This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate the beautiful love stories that have blossomed or continued to prosper within our Seasons communities.

From chance meetings and memorable first impressions, to a lifetime of milestones shared, our resident couples have opened up about their deep connections and unique relationships.

Over the years, these sweet couples have navigated the highs and lows of life together, ensuring these unique love stories will forever stand the test of time.

On behalf of the Seasons Team, Happy Valentine’s Day to all our incredible Seasons residents and couples.

Barb & Doug

When Doug first met Barb at Sunday School, she made quite the impression on him.

“She was the chatty one,” he said.

However, it was not until the pair reunited at a friend’s 21st birthday party that they decided to go out on a date, with Doug even driving Barb home.

In the year of 1967, the sweet couple said “I do”.

Despite knowing each other for decades, the love and appreciation the pair share for each other has never dissipated.

“Barb is loveable, reliable and a great cook,” Doug said.

“We’re very in sync with each other and often know what the other one is thinking.”

Meanwhile, Barb said she is grateful for the support she has always received from Doug.

“He has encouraged me to grow and always made me feel very loved,” she said.

Bernie & Bobbie

The stars aligned for Bernie and Bobbie, who discovered by chance that they were neighbours.

After meeting through the Astronomical Society in 1973, Bernie offered to walk Bernie home, when to his surprise they arrived at her doorstep – just two doors down from his own.

“I was President of the Astronomical Society and Bobbie was the first girl that didn’t ask me what my star sign was,” he said.

As fate would have it, the couple fell in love and married in 1974 – just a year after meeting in their 30’s.

While life has had its ups and downs, the couple said it has always been easier knowing they have each other’s unwavering support.

“I’ll always remember when Bernie found out we couldn’t have children and he stayed with me,” Bobbie said.

Stan & Bev

Young sweethearts Stan and Bev first met as colleagues when they were working at the General Post Office – and immediately thought the other was the perfect package.

In their late teens at the time, the pair were working in one of the CBD’s busiest post offices – Brisbane’s Queen Street, and eventually wed in 1954.

When asked about the secret to their long and happy union, Stan said his wife was a “good looking, young Sheila” while Bev said Stan had always been “easy to get on with.”

Robert & Lorraine

Hanging over the side of a fence in the hope his crush Lorraine would walk by, a then teenage Robert thought she was well worth the wait then and still does to this day.

The couple, who have now spent 65 years together, got married in New South Wales in 1960.

While Lorraine believes her husband is one of a kind, Robert said his love remains as strong as ever.

“After 65 years, I still love her,” he said.

Keith & Jacqui

Jacqui may have arrived at the Brisbane Post Office with a Minister for a tour, but she left that day with her future husband Keith.

The couple met at the Caboolture Methodist Church Youth Club in 1957 and married three years later.

“Jacqui really looks after me and I love her,” Keith said.

“She’s had 66 years of practice and we are still in love.”

Describing her husband as incredibly kind and caring, Jacqui said “he’s rather adorable”.

Alan & Pat

It was love at first sight for Alan and Pat, who met later in life, aged in their 50’s.

The duo first crossed paths in 1992 during a game of rugby, with the Brisbane Broncos playing of course.

Five years later, they married and life has been ever sweeter since.

While Alan’s sense of humour has always impressed Pat, Alan said he appreciates everything about his wife.

“(I love) that she’s just Pat,” he said.

“She’s perfect.”
