Wandering gourmets of Waterford West

Wandering gourmets of Waterford West

Inspired by the need for some ‘secret men’s business’, Seasons Waterford West’s menfolk started the Wandering Gourmets group. And while food may form the basis of their outings, it turns out there is something even more nourishing on the menu.

The Wandering Gourmets meet every fortnight and visit a range of different clubs, cafés and restaurants and the idea came from the residents themselves.

“There were a lot of activities for the ladies, but not as many for the blokes. So we had a meeting and formed the idea of having a men’s group,” says David.

The group has grown in popularity and has expanded to include residents from Seasons Redbank Plains as well.

“We average around ten people on each outing and we’ve also started pulling in people from Redbank Plains. Every second Tuesday we go and meet up out their way and meet up at a club. So there’s probably around 14 or 15 people then,” says Joe.

“We’re trying to get a lot of men into it to go out and enjoy themselves. It’s about fellowship. Sitting there talking, telling each other how good we are and telling tall tales and just enjoying life.”

Group member Barry says that getting out and about to different places is something to look forward to.

“I think it’s good for a group of men to get out and enjoy themselves on a regular basis. We have a variety of places we go to which makes it very interesting,” says Barry.

But alongside all the laughter and banter, according to group member Martyn, the group has provided support and bonding through difficult times.

“Most of the guys in the group, their wives have either just passed away in the last couple of years or are on their way,” says Martyn.

“It’s not a compulsory thing, but it’s somewhere that if you’re feeling a little bit miserable and you don’t want to be miserable because you want to be happy, you go along.”

“If you listen to some of the shyacking going on, you’d think ‘these guys hate each other’ but we love each other. We’re there supporting each other when we need it.”
